I have been involved in photography since my youth; I therefore come from analogue photography and spent many years there with small, medium and large format up to 8×10″; in 2003 small and medium format was replaced by a Canon digital camera; in 2008 I finally parted with the analogue large format equipment and replaced it with a digital camera from Hasselblad.
I am a graduate of the Prager Photo School and the subject of my diploma thesis became my first book: ‘The Digital Workflow in Nature Photography’, followed a year later by ‘Fine Art Printing’ and only the 3rd book was actually my intended subject for the diploma thesis (if digital technology hadn't overtaken me) ==> ‘Komposition und Bildwirkung in der Fotografie’. I then published my 4th textbook in 2010 ==> ‘Digital Nature Photography’; my partner Beate was my co-author for all of these books.
The 4th book brings us to my real passion, nature photography. I'm interested in everything that has to do with nature and I use everything from microscope to telephoto lenses. So far, I have only restricted myself in terms of where I shoot; I specialise in Europe. I still have a darkroom, but only for black and white and I'm in the fortunate position of being able to call a small photo studio my own. I use Hahnemühle speciality papers (such as William Turner or Pearl) for the fine art prints.
I am one of 6 founding members of the Association for Animal and Nature Photography Austria, which we founded in 1988.
I have been working intensively on the various techniques of microscopy photography since 2010. In 2015, we summarised what we had learnt in our fifth book ‘’Mikrofotografie‘’.
In autumn 2020, I was elected to the board of the Mikroskopische Gesellschaft Wien - as Vice President - and then President at the 2021 General Assembly.
It is very important to me to pass on my knowledge and to learn from others. That's why I have been offering regular workshops on a wide range of photographic subjects for many years. The topics I offer also reflect my current focus and interests.

I see myself as part of the ‘Naturfoto Zimmert company’. When I was young, I had neither the interest nor the financial means to get involved in photography. But I soon realised that supporting a photographer (back office) can also be very exciting and satisfying and - with all modesty - is not completely unimportant for the photographer's success.
Without careful documentation on location, maintaining the analogue image archive, night shifts with data backups, contacts with experts or public relations work, there would be much less time available for photography. Without my editorial work and my role as a sparring partner in hours of discussions, there would be neither a book nor an article or a website.
